To the Editor.—

Regarding the "Hashish" article by Tennant et al (216:1965, 1971), there is no reason for their almost-apologetic statement that the substance they studied was illegal and therefore probably contaminated. Quite the opposite; rather than the methodologically more sophisticated but often substantively more sterile conclusions that are currently appearing from some authors who have used the synthetically produced and pure drugs, we need far more studies of just this type. Far too little is known about the common "street" drugs which are currently being used and abused. We need more work done on what is the usual, normally consumed substance, and that material is quite certainly going to be impure and contaminated.

Tennant et al might have been more cautious about some of their general statements, due to the size of their sample. With only 31 subjects, it is difficult to draw statistically significant conclusions. A follow-up of their . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
