To the Editor.—

In a brief discussion of salmonellosis in the MEDICAL NEWS section of THE JOURNAL (222:1117, 1972), the following statement is made: "There is no Salmonella vaccine for humans except S typhi, paratyphoid A and B." This statement leaves the erroneous impression that the combined typhoid and paratyphoid (TAB) vaccine is available. At present, typhoid vaccines are no longer combined with paratyphoid A and B. The effectiveness of paratyphoid A vaccine has never been established and field trials have shown that the small amount of paratyphoid B vaccine present in previous TAB vaccines was not effective.¹ Consequently, and because paratyphoid A and B antigens are believed to increase the risk of vaccine reaction with typhoid vaccine, these were deleted from formulations of typhoid vaccine in the last few years.
