To the Editor.—

In regard to computer-based instruction, the article by Goldberg et al (223:269, 1973) is all very nice and scientific but perhaps some philosophical thought should be given to the computer and teaching pro or con, good or bad.

During the past decade, I have had the opportunity to observe a passing parade of young physicians starting practice. Many times, when they are away from their "computer base" hospital or medical center, they seem unable to function, having become so dependent on such teaching crutches that they cannot do independent thinking. I noticed many of them that start in a small community do poorly, then gravitate close to "a medical center."
