Preservation of Cannabis

To the Editor.—

As suppliers of Cannabis sativa L (marihuana) for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), we would like to clarify pertinent questions in regard to the analysis of C sativa L. Rodin et al (213:1300, 1970) expressed dismay at the cannabis material he received from the National Institute of Mental Health. Two independent laboratories obtained a different percentage of (-) -{bigtriangleup}9-trans-tetrahydrocannabinol than was reported by the NIMH. Additionally, Liskow (214:1907, 1970) has stated that Dr. Braenden of the United Nations recommended that C sativa L be frozen under nitrogen to avoid deterioration. We would like to make the point emphatic that it is not necessary to use such strenuous conditions for the storage of cannabis.
