Optimal Criteria for End-Stage Kidney Disease Care

Under a contract agreement with the Regional Medical Programs Service (RMPS), the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH) constituted a Steering Committee and four advisory subcommittees to identify optimal criteria for the classification of hospitals according to their capability of providing a specified level of stratified care for patients with heart disease, cancer, stroke, or end-stage kidney disease. One of the purposes of this undertaking is to fulfill a major requirement of Section 907 of Public Law 89-239 (as amended by Public Law 91-515) to develop for the Secretary, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, criteria for the identification of medical facilities in the United States, capable of providing the most advanced techniques and methods for diagnosis and treatment of the four subject diseases.
