To the Editor.—

Dr. Lyons (225:313, 1973) chides Dr. N. J. C. Andreasen's psychiatric aspersions on James Joyce as "schizoid" (224:67,1973). All art is a projection of the artist's mind on reality, as many years ago averred by My Lord Clark, then plain Mr. Clark, to the Harvard boys in a lecture "Icon and Idea"; ditto modern myth makers, eg, Freud and Jung.

A touch of "psychosis" may be quite all right in ourselves as physicians in our roles as hired listening posts. Declared and accepted by us, our patients, and our friends, and not acted out so as to repel them or attract the unfavorable attention of the police, it is an immunization of our psyches. Joyce, as God's priest, transubstantiated the banal day in Dublin so that we faithful may partake of the body and blood of eternal mother nature.
