Monilial Vaginitis

To the Editor.—

A physician asked about his recent observation of an increased incidence of monilial vaginitis in the university where he is a health officer and in the surrounding community (226:800, 1973). Dr. Donald Dukelow replied to the subject very nicely but left out some factors that should be mentioned.

It has been my impression that there has been an increased incidence of monilial vaginitis in teen-age and college-age girls. A factor is the wearing of pantyhose, usually worn over or under other panties. The presence of two fabrics in this already warm and moist area predisposes it to increased heat and moisture with resultant tendency to moniliasis.

Another factor arises when young girls wear a panty brief in bed under their nightgown or pajamas. This then means an additional nocturnal eight hours of more moist warmth.
