Medical school helps to run clinic in part of 'the other Florida'
Lafayette County may be 'way down upon the Suwannee River,' but that doesn't put it far, far away from modern medicine.
The northern Florida county (pronounced La FAY ette in the region) is indeed upon the "Swannee River" that Stephen Collins Foster made famous with his ballad "Old Folks at Home." Or, more accurately, the river is on the county, forming 88 km (55 miles) of its border and occasionally flooding some of the 1,427 sq km (549 sq miles) on which the inhabitants raise tobacco, pulpwood, and poultry.
Besides the river that Americans have been singing about—usually with no idea of where it is—for 124 years, the county has about 2,900 people, a median family income of $5,300, no private physicians, and a unique clinic that is just starting its seventh year.
