I THANK Dr. Lasagna for his letter (p 1027). Any accusation of fraud should be substantiated on the public record.
I traveled to Rockville, Md, in April to testify before a hearing judge of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning the merits of the FDA Commissioner's proposal to mandate a further iron fortification of bread and flour. The proposal had been published by the FDA on Dec 3, 1971. It was defended in a long article in the Federal Register of Oct 15, 1973, signed by A. M. Schmidt, Commissioner of Food and Drugs. In discussing my testimony with counsel, I pointed out that the Commissioner's statement is seriously flawed by claims and arguments that are palpably false. I was advised by counsel to refrain from any such statement. To criticize the Commissioner in an FDA hearing would be like going into a church and criticizing God. So I
