Amniocentesis in Tay-Sachs Disease

To the Editor.—

I read with interest Dr. Fred Rosner's letter regarding amniocentesis for Tay-Sachs disease. Since I am not a medical doctor, I am not qualified to respond on the medical aspects of this problem, but as a minister, I am concerned with the arbitrary moral stance taken by Dr. Rosner. I would, therefore, like to raise the following points on this aspect of his letter.

I take "traditional Judaism," as used by Dr. Rosner, to be a euphemism for Orthodox Judaism. The inference is that his point of view is definitive for all Jews, including those of the Conservative and Reformed traditions. I would question this presumption!

Dr. Rosner seems to separate "ethical and religious considerations, such as the Biblical commandment to procreate" from "medical and genetic factors," as though they were mutually exclusive.
