To the Editor.—

This letter is written in response to Dr. Charles Aring's COMMENTARY on abortion. Granted, there are reasons pro and con abortion, but his speculations about the harmful effects of abortion were inaccurate and his overall lack of understanding of the subject was quite apparent.

Dr. Aring stated that he ventured into the field of abortion with "trepidation and humility," but perhaps he neglected to mention some other companions that accompanied him on this journey. Lack of information is one of these companions, as his commentary reveals that he has not studied the vast psychiatric literature on therapeutic abortions; he also has demonstrated a lack of direct experience with those seeking abortions.

He furthermore philosophizes over responsibility. While this is fine, what do we do meanwhile with a married woman of 40 who is pregnant and feels very depressed and incapable of raising another child? Philosophy she wants . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
