PRESERVATION of high-quality medical care in the future will depend in an important way on standards set by local Professional Standards Review Organizations (PSROs). Such standards must be based on criteria that are applicable initially to the care of patients in short-term hospitals with specific diagnoses or problems. The development of model criteria was assigned in 1972 by the American Medical Association to a Task Force on Guidelines of Care. A report from this Task Force appeared approximately six months ago.1,2 It is the purpose of this communication to outline the related activities of the AMA since that date and to indicate future plans.
