To the Editor.—
I was particularly happy to see attention called to the injuries associated with hang gliding. Drs Krissoff and Eiseman correctly point out the dangers of this new sport; however, our recent experience would take exception to his conclusion that the novice hang glider is seldom injured. I know of five young novice hang gliders who suffered permanent quadriplegia or paraplegia from their accidents.
Admittedly, hang gliding is a dangerous sport. Those who are experienced enough to fly high and far may be taking a greater risk at fatal injuries. However, one cannot ignore the excitement and challenge that this sport offers the teenager. It is just unconscionable to allow them to fly any machine without the basic rudiments of aerodynamics and safety precautions.
