To the Editor.—
A superb example of reductio ad absurdum is embodied in the MEDICAL NEWS article, "Arguments Over Behavior and Heart Disease Continue" (232:697, 1975).
For leaders in cardiology and preventive medicine to engage in an argument as to whether emotional factors or hypertension or cigarette smoking or diet or hypercholesterolemia represents the crucial etiologic factor in coronary disease puts all three of those physicians into the type A behavior bracket.
So they all should stop smoking, watch their blood pressure, exercise, and cut down on high cholesterol foods. Oh yes, maybe the hearts of all three physicians would profit by their seeing a psychiatrist!
