As an ardent, perhaps overenthusiastic, reader of JAMA, Neill F. David, MD, of Rockport, Md, seems never to neglect "JAMA 75 Years Ago." He was especially fascinated by the item that appeared in the Feb 9, 1976, issue (p 645) about "Treatment of Migraine." As is his wont, having read the item, he felt compelled to write a letter that can be paraphrased as follows.

Dr E. W. Mitchell's vintage-1901 article about migraine had special personal interest for me. My mother and her mother had suffered from sick headaches (they had never heard of anything called migraine). When I had my first attack of migraine at about the age of 12, the premonitory visual scotoma was not disturbing. After my second or third attack, I was shuffled off to see a doctor whom my mother called "the oculist." I was promptly fitted with glasses and told to wear them while . . .
