Cancer patients' organization helps them deal with problems of living

"In sharing our problems, we discovered that anger, fear, depression, rejection, and sexual problems were often more difficult to contend with than cancer."

This is how Orville Kelly, a cancer patient from Burlington, Iowa, describes the first meeting of Make Today Count, Inc., an organization for patients with advanced cancer and their families.

"We found [that] many of our problems were created by ourselves; others by misconceptions about cancer," Mr Kelly said.

"One young patient told us that her mother thinks that cancer is the work of the devil. Another man told us his wife refused to even kiss him any longer because she read somewhere that cancer was contagious. Still another recently divorced patient said: 'I used to worry about dying, but I've found there are worse things than death.'"
