To the Editor.—

There are several errors in Dr Tramont's article entitled "Persistence of Treponema pallidum Following Penicillin G Therapy," (236: 2206, 1976). The author states that "in two adult patients, T pallidum was isolated from the CSF despite the fact that each received currently recommended amounts of penicillin G benzathine for secondary and neurosyphilis, respectively." However, the second case report describes isolation of T pallidum from CSF obtained before the patient received any penicillin. The author also states that this patient was later treated with "20 million units aqueous penicillin G benzathine, administered intravenously daily for three weeks." The benzathine salt of penicillin G should only be given intramuscularly. We feel these points need explanation. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
