Hypertension in Pregnancy, edited by Marshall D. Lindheimer, Adrian I. Katz, and Frederick P. Zuspan, 443 pp, with illus, $32, New York, Wiley, 1976.
At first blush it might not seem appropriate to group these two volumes into a single review. Nevertheless, both are, in the main, concerned with the pathophysiology of the hypertensive disorders that complicate pregnancy; the kidney appears to be the touchstone in the control of blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis as well as salt, water, and electrolyte metabolism.
Unfortunately, the text with the more inviting title offers the least, since the book contains only the edited proceedings of an Invitational Symposium on Hypertension in Pregnancy held in Chicago, September 1975. Most papers are followed by a brief, usually noncontributory dialogue among discussants. Most of the papers reflect the special interests of the investigators, and the material is dated.
