Although modern vascular surgery had its beginnings much earlier, its years of growth and flourish are a phenomenon of the second half of this century. Earlier achievements and observations were summarized in 1946 in the first edition of Peripheral Vascular Diseases by Allen, Barker, and Hines. For many physicians and even the few surgeons who were to create the specialty of peripheral vascular surgery, this book was the Bible. Now, in Rutherford's contribution, we see what must be considered the definitive current statement on surgical treatment of peripheral vascular conditions. Nearly everything in this volume pertains to observations made during the last 25 years. Most is written by physicians who had not yet graduated from medical school during the rapid advancement of vascular surgery during the 1950s.
