The British often conceal the contents of a perfectly delightful publication by an inappropriate title. Recent Advances in Surgery: No. 9 is, in fact, a compilation of exactly 19 subjects, only loosely related, and not entirely in keeping with the American concept of surgical literature. The 1973 predecessor, Recent Advances in Surgery: No. 8, presented 19 other topics by the same editor, each a complete review from the earliest information to the current ideas on the subject.

It is a reader's delight to glance down the table of contents in either of these volumes, choosing interesting chapters through which to browse before settling down to a careful study of each monograph.
