The British often conceal the contents of a perfectly delightful publication by an inappropriate title. Recent Advances in Surgery: No. 9 is, in fact, a compilation of exactly 19 subjects, only loosely related, and not entirely in keeping with the American concept of surgical literature. The 1973 predecessor, Recent Advances in Surgery: No. 8, presented 19 other topics by the same editor, each a complete review from the earliest information to the current ideas on the subject.
It is a reader's delight to glance down the table of contents in either of these volumes, choosing interesting chapters through which to browse before settling down to a careful study of each monograph.
One could retitle the book The ABCs of... and among the first chapters list Apudomas, Back pain, and Coronary artery surgery. However, the authors' basic treatment of these three chapters is transformed into a rich and
