It's back to white coats for Houston high schoolers
Every once in a while, an out-of-towner—often somebody prominent—phones Houston to appeal to Baylor College of Medicine on behalf of a child. The caller always is turned down.
Pretty heartless. Or at least it might be if these callers were seeking medical care for their youngsters. But that's not what they're after. They're hoping to have their children admitted to the High School for Health Professions (HSHP).
This kind of pushy parenting brings an ironic little smile to the lips of the HSHP Principal Perry E. Weston. He can remember the late summer of 1972, when he made the rounds of Houston's junior high schools—almost hat in hand—to urge guidance counselors and graduating ninth graders to help him fill the first class of 45 sophomores at the HSHP.
