In June 1978 the American Medical Association House of Delegates voted a 50% reduction in annual membership dues for physicians entering their first year of practice. This reduces to $125 the cost of an AMA membership for the young physician who is just getting established in medical practice, and it should encourage residents who now pay only $35 per year to continue as AMA members at the completion of their training.

Membership figures for 1977 show a total active AMA membership of 207,000. Of this number, 174,500 paid full dues, 13,600 were resident physician members, and 14.400 were medical student members. Obviously, young physicians are becoming more active in organized medicine than they have been in the past, and the AMA is actively soliciting their participation, for the young people represent the future health and influence of the AMA.
