Sufficient time has now passed that we can view the annual meeting of the American Medical Association held in St Louis June 18 through 22 in a detached and objective manner. Two notable features will give this meeting historical importance and make it a point of reference for years to come; it was the last of a traditional format in which a scientific session was held conjointly with the meeting of the House of Delegates, and the House gave its major attention to the problem of controlling the rising costs of medical care.
The matter of divorcing the scientific session from the meeting of the House is of no small importance and should be subject to periodic review. Science has always been very much the business of the AMA, and physicians like to think of themselves as scientists first and as all other descriptors, including politicians, second. Although most of
