Experimental retinoid effective in treatment of severe acne

Experimental use of the oral agent isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) has produced extensive remissions of cystic and conglobate acne so far in two series, totaling 47 patients. Less clear are the drug's effects on various keratinizing dermatoses and basal cell carcinomas.

The retinoids, a family of compounds that includes both synthetic and natural forms of vitamin A, appear to have effects on cell maturation and differentiation. Because of this, isotretinoin is being used also in a clinical chemoprevention trial with volunteers who are at high risk for bladder cancer (JAMA [MEDICAL NEWS] 240:609-610, 614-615, 1978).

During the American Academy of Dermatology's annual meeting in Chicago, some results to date in the cutaneous trials were discussed by Gary L. Peck, MD, senior investigator, Dermatology Branch, National Cancer Institute (NCI), Bethesda, Md, and Dorothy B.
