To the Editor.—
In answer to a question (242:1083, 1979) about precautions for a medical student who will spend two years in Mexico, I wrote: "In rural Mexico schistosomiasis (from bathing) and trypanosomiasis may be risks."
T. H. Weller, MD, states that classical schistosomiasis does not occur in Mexico or elsewhere north of Venezuela, because the appropriate vectors are lacking (written communication to editor of THE JOURNAL, Sept 13, 1979). Schistosomiasis does occur, however, in parts of the Caribbean region.1 Dermatitis from schistosomal cercariae, "swimmer's itch," is a risk in Mexico and in many places of Central and South America, as it also is in parts of the United States and in Canada.
