Medicine lost a distinguished physician and I a valued friend and colleague with the death of Henry T. Ricketts, MD, on Nov 23, 1979. Henry was born in Berlin on Aug 11, 1901, of American parents. He graduated with a BS degree from the University of Chicago in 1924 and then transferred to Harvard, where he obtained the MD degree in 1929. In 1933 he returned to the University of Chicago School of Medicine as an instructor. At that time, this was a new school built as an integral part of the university, complete with a teaching hospital on the university campus. The school had a brand-new philosophy of medical education: All clinical teachers were full-time salaried university faculty and functioned as did teachers in all other faculties in the university.
