Choosing a Psychotherapist

To the Editor.—

It appears that Nathan Schnaper, MD (242:327, 1979), thinks shopping is the key to choosing a psychotherapist. Well, I cannot say he is completely wrong, but I believe most patients have a somewhat better plan available to them. After all, a significant number of patients are referred by their internist or general practitioner, and said physician's choice of a psychotherapist is usually based on reasonably successful past performances with other patients who had been referred to that therapist.

Still another source stems from physicians in any specialty having a personal acquaintanceship or friendship with one of the local therapists. I know, for example, that a number of the physicians in my medical building frequently have lunch together, with the result that we know one another well.
