To the Editor.—

In a recent MEDICAL NEWS article (1981;245:1625), Elizabeth Rasche González, in her article on calcium deposits on intrauterine devices (IUDs), states: "The Food and Drug Administration recommends replacement of IUDs every three years." I would like to clarify that the FDA has approved medicated IUDs (Copper-7, Copper-T, Progestasert) with specific time intervals to replace these IUDs. However, this is not the case with inert IUDs (Lippes Loop, Saf-T-Coil). The FDA did not recommend that inert IUDs be replaced after any specific time interval. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
