To the Editor.—

In their article Bender et al (1980;243:145) described the various clinical manifestations of carcinoma in situ on the genitalia of men and women. Of the 19 patients described, three (cases 17, 18, and 19) are of particular interest to us. The type of genital lesion in these three patients appears to be identical to the genital lesions previously reported by two of these same investigators as pigmented penile papules with changes of carcinoma in situ,1 and are apparently the same type of genital lesion present on the 34 patients seen and described by us as bowenoid papulosis.2-4

Unfortunately, one of our articles concerning this same disease process3 was misinterpreted by Bender and his colleagues. We did not describe lesions clinically resembling Bowen's disease.
