To the Readers.—

A JAMA COMMENTARY by H. J. Roberts, MD (1981; 246:129), debated an editorial that appeared in another journal.¹ Dr Roberts cited personal experience and medical literature to note various untoward effects associated with vitamin E; while acknowledging the vitamin as an essential nutrient, he questioned its value in large doses for numerous conditions for which it is sometimes used.

This article has brought forth a wide spectrum of mail both in support and in criticism. Some did not meet editorial standards. However, we can only conclude that publication of that which did meet editorial standards would leave the reader about where he was before: except for recognized nutritional needs in relatively small quantities, the eventual status in medicine of the vitamin in high doses remains to be resolved.
