To the Editor.—

We were pleased to see the discussion of brain electrical activity mapping (BEAM) in the MEDICAL NEWS article "New Diagnostic Technique BEAMed at Dyslexia" (1982;247:2072). We have employed a similar technique at St Francis Hospital, Miami Beach, Fla, for the past two years utilizing spectral analysis of the EEG and auditory and visualevoked test conditions. Our data, as well as similarly collected test results from five other regional centers located in New York, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Illinois, are forwarded to a central computer and support facility in New York. This program, called "Neurometrics," permits each center to have its data analyzed in comparison with a continually updated data base. Computerobtained z scores are used to place a probability value relating regional brain electrical activity to a statistical deviation from the norm.
