To the Editor.—
I was interested to read the answer given by Dr Irwin Polk to a question concerning the hazards of long-term use of inhaled beclomethasone, which appeared in THE JOURNAL. This inhaled steroid has been used in the United Kingdom since 1972 and is available for prescription in more than 100 countries throughout the world. Its sales during the past decade suggest that more than 4 million patient-years of experience has been gained with this drug and, indeed, more than 500 clinical trials have been reported. The safety of inhaled beclomethasone has been well established by worldwide experience, and I know of no reports of clinically important systemic side effects from its treatment.
