Elsewhere in this issue (p 1465), you will find the much-awaited results of the massive, expensive, and lengthy clinical investigation termed "Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT)," which is a product of more than seven years, 28 institutions, and 250 investigators. With this publication, THE JOURNAL is addressing several of its goals that were published on Aug 6. We are especially meeting our eighth goal, which is "To foster responsible debate on controversial issues that affect medical practice."
The MRFIT study was a randomized primary prevention trial designed to test the effect of a program of intervention with hypertension, cigarette smoking, and blood cholesterol in high-risk men in the United States on mortality from coronary heart disease. The results were that risk factor levels did decline, and there may have been a reduction in coronary heart disease mortality.
