Physicians who perform preplacement medical examinations for industry or business at the time of hire or job transfer should be aware of the legal obligations placed on management by the EEOC regulations;
503 and
504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; and the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Act of 1974. This can be accomplished by consulting with the personnel and legal departments or consultants of the company for whom the physician is performing the medical evaluations.
I agree with Dr Lerner's advice to physicians expressed in the second paragraph of his response to Dr Fisher.
A physician who accepts responsibility for this type of examination is urged to review carefully an article published in the Journal of Occupational Medicine,1 as well as the reference listed by Dr Lerner.
