An Appeal: To the Scientists of the American Medical Association

To the Editor.—

Respected colleagues, I work as a physician in the Soviet Union, and I appeal to you with regard to the extremely complex international situation that is balancing on the edge of a war destructive to all living things on our planet through the use of thermonuclear, chemical, biologic, meteorological, and other varieties of qualitatively new weapons of mass annihilation. Such war, never yet seen on earth, can break out at any moment, even completely by accident, which is aided by the already present huge arsenals of weapons of mass annihilation (equivalent to 20 tons of conventional explosives for each of the earth's inhabitants!) and the means of their lightninglike delivery to their targets.
