In Reply.—

I have enjoyed reading the letter of Dr Caplan and the cited articles.

It is not my objective to deprecate CME. It is, rather, to emphasize that professional growth of physicians depends on many types of inputs. On many occasions, the formal CME courses seem disappointing. If the stimulus of some of us as critics will help this aspect of American medical education to improve its effectiveness and thus its image, then we will have done our bit to help the cause. I have taken part in hundreds of CME exercises and have known thousands of the pupils personally.

I believe the general consensus is that more rigorous discipline, better examinations, a grading system, and true postgraduate academic achievement are most severely needed. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
