'Caution: Pets May Be Hazardous to Your Health'

Today, we expect to find the label, "Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined That Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to Your Health," on every cigarette package. We do not, however, place a similar label, "Caution: This Pet May Be a Hazard to Your Health," on every pet. Nevertheless, the risks are there for those who handle pets. In addition, there are diagnostic hazards for those who must deal with their associated illnesses. The articles appearing in this issue of THE JOURNAL bring several of these hazards to our attention. If we keep such hazards in mind, we can avoid them, thereby making the rewards from informed, responsible pet ownership even greater. Likewise, an adequate suspicion of these hazards often is critical to achieving the rewards of prompt, accurate diagnosis and effective therapy.
