To the Editor.—
I would like to clarify a statement in my previous letter, in which I described the anxiolytic alprazolam (Xanax) as "exceptional."1 I meant to convey that, unlike conventional antianxiety agents, alprazolam seems to have antidepressant properties.2 Indeed, its use in anxious, depressed patients may be accompanied by neuroendocrine changes suggestive of recovery from depression.3
