To the Editor.—
I congratulate you for your strong stand against boxing and would like to add my own voice to the debate. I went to a military high school where I boxed in amateur tournaments for three years. During that time, I sustained a dental injury, as well as a fracture of the first metacarpal bone in my dominant hand. At the age of 43 years, I have a resultant basilar arthritis of the right thumb. What bothers me the most about my own injuries is that I was told recently by an ophthalmologist that I have a "retinal scar" that he believes is a result of fighting.
For several years in early practice I did some moonlighting as a boxing doctor. I performed physical examinations and stood by for many of the local tournaments, as well as the Golden Glove Tournament of Champions in Chicago. It was during
