To the Editor.—
This letter concerns the editorial by Dr Lundberg1 advocating the banning of boxing in civilized countries. Dr Lundberg and others have made the personal judgment that boxing is immoral because the participants risk death or injury. If the medical profession accepts this type of judgment about boxing, then we should be consistent and institute measures to ban all sports that involve personal risk for participants. Why not ban football, auto racing, ice hockey, mountain climbing, hang gliding, spelunking, and sky jumping, since all of these sports put the participants at personal risk?
Furthermore, let us not confine our efforts only to organized sports. After all, many of us have seen good friends and even medical colleagues sustain serious injuries while on skiing vacations. Surely the social conscience of our profession should be such that we throw the full weight of our organization behind legislation to ban
