With this issue, THE JOURNAL begins publication of "From the FDA," in the MEDICAL NEWS section, presenting brief, newsworthy items of importance to physicians, related to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) scientific and regulatory activities. We are grateful for this opportunity to communicate directly with physicians throughout the United States and the world because of our renewed commitment to work closely with the medical profession and other health professionals, who may know relatively little about the work of the FDA but whose practice is often significantly affected by what we do.

This means of communicating directly with the medical profession is intended to make available current, useful information that can significantly affect medical practice— effective use of new and sophisticated medical instrumentation, new products emerging from the field of biotechnology, and problems associated with our food supply, such as reactions to sulfites.
