The Food and Drug Administration recently mailed a Safety Alert Letter describing a serious problem with pediatric cribs to more than 7,300 hospitals in the United States.

The FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health received reports of two deaths of young children, aged 17 and 23 months, as a result of entrapment between an incompletely fastened security top and the side rails of a pediatric crib. The two cribs involved were the Tabbert or Tab Crib, Model C-374; and the Hill-Rom Crib, Model 249. Additional label names, such as Today Crib, Model C-374, may also be in use. Various manufacturers' or distributors' names are involved. These include Midmark, Inc (800) 643-6275; Hill-Rom Co (812) 934-7777; Whittaker Medical Manufacturing Company or Whittaker General Medical (800) 446-3008; Cambridge Scientific Industries (800) 638-9566; and Inter-Royal Corporation (212) 686-3500.
