This is the 85th EDUCATION ISSUE of THE JOURNAL. The first report on medical education in the United States was published in the Sept 21, 1901, issue of JAMA.
The spectrum on the cover of the current issue illustrates the continuum of medical education. The individual will move in and out of this continuum several times during his practicing career. The spectrum also suggests the variety of persons involved in the health care professions.

Revision of Standards
The recently approved document "Functions and Structure of a Medical School," reprinted in Section I, is an indication of the change occurring in medical education. The document contains the standards for an accredited program leading to the MD degree.
Keeping pace with the advances in science and medicine, the medical education community has enhanced the standards by which medical education programs are appraised.
