For several years this section of the EDUCATION ISSUE has reviewed "Recent Events of Special Interest to Medical Education." An event of current importance to the education of physicians in the United States is the recent revision of standards. On Feb 19,1985, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) adopted a new set of standards for programs conducted by US medical schools. These standards were subsequently approved by the American Medical Association (AMA) Council on Medical Education (March 3, 1985) and by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Executive Council (April 4, 1985). The document, "Functions and Structure of a Medical School; Standards for Accreditation of Medical Education Programs Leading to the MD Degree" is reprinted in this section of the EDUCATION ISSUE.
