To the Editor.—
The report in your LETTERS section by Chen et al1 in the Feb 1 issue is of interest, but the observation is neither new nor unique. The fact that intestinal ischemia produces a clinical picture mimicking adynamic (paralytic) ileus has been known to surgeons for years. In the first edition of the Manual of Surgical Therapeutics,2 we described the features of intestinal ischemia and mesenteric infarction presenting clinically as paralytic ileus. We termed this clinical situation "vascular ileus," but I believe neither the appellation nor the description originated with us.
