To the Editor.—
I take exception to the inference by Drs Schultz and de Camara1 that individuals sustaining facial bone fractures require consultation with a plastic surgeon. What about the otolaryngologist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon? Most acutely traumatized patients are initially evaluated by the emergency room physician. Subsequent consultation and referral patterns vary per individual physician's bias, local precedence, and availability of consultants.
My own experience has shown that many physicians are unaware of the training and capabilities of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Of the three aforementioned subspecialists we probably have the most extensive and concentrated training with respect to the oral-facial structure.
