To the Editor.—

In the excellent Aug 2, 1985, issue of JAMA, which gave so much attention to the all-important nuclear threat question, it was stated that at its fifth annual meeting, held this past summer in Budapest, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) decided that one of its "major aims now involves improving children's health, especially in third world countries."¹

No one will dispute the tragic loss of life among children in developing countries due to illnesses that can often either be prevented or fairly easily treated if adequate facilities are available. I saw this for myself when I served as the UNICEF representative in Bangladesh from 1971 to 1980. But, there are many international and national governmental and nongovermental organizations trying to cope with this problem and therefore one has to wonder whether it is essential, apart from humanitarian reasons, for another organization . . .
