First Case of AIDS in Hong Kong

To the Editor.—

We wish to update a statement in the authoritative article entitled "The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome" that appeared in the Oct 19, 1984, issue of THE JOURNAL.1 In the paragraph on etiology, it was stated that "AIDS had not been reported in nonhemophiliac, nonaddicted heterosexual Asians."

In February 1985, through the spokesman of the Medical and Health Department, we announced the first confirmed case of AIDS in Hong Kong, which happened also to be the second case in the Far East, the first occurring in a Japanese carrier of ATLV (a type C retrovirus).2

Report of a Case.—

A 46-year-old Chinese man presented in September 1984 with a four-week history of progressive lethargy, fever, and epigastric pain, associated with a 9-kg weight loss. He worked in a restaurant in New York and came back to Hong Kong four months prior to seeking medical advice.
