In Reply.—
My impression concerning the use of halogenated soaps for disinfection of HTLV-III was based on published commentary on their effectiveness.1 Although I believe that they are effective, I do not find convincing evidence in the peer-reviewed literature that such products have been shown to disinfect HTLV-III, and I agree with Drs Schuster, Cohn, and McMeeking that studying their effectiveness is strongly indicated.
