The National Health Screening Council for Volunteer Organizations Inc has a well-deserved reputation for integrity, professionalism, energy, and self-discipline, and I owe its staff a debt of gratitude for the assistance they offered during my research. Although my conclusion is that screening in health fairs is excessive at present, it would be an error to interpret this research as a general indictment of health fairs. On the contrary, I share Dr Perry's view that health fairs may be effective vehicles for health education and promotion, and I urge further research, in cooperation with NHSCVO and other health fair sponsors, to help health fairs reach their full potential. . . .
